Mitch White, Justin Bruihl, Evan Phillips (2-3), Alex Vesia and Craig Kimbrel combined to limit San Diego to seven hits and one run in the opener of a four-game series. The win put the Dodgers (47-28) 2½ games ahead of the Padres (46-32) in the National League West standings. Trea Turner then took advantage of the Padres having Wil Myers pitch the ninth inning by hitting a fly ball to the third level of the Western Metal Supply Co. building beyond the wall in left field. After Trea Turner’s blooper dropped for an RBI single and Will Smith drew a walk with the bases loaded, Justin Turner broke the game open in the seventh inning with a grand slam. The multi-home run game was Turner’s second of the season and 13th of his career.

The seasons changed, the baseball enlivened, but the 37-year-old third baseman did not hit a home run. It was the longest he’s gone without a homer, in terms of games or plate appearances, in 11 years. In 2022, Turner split his time between third base and designated hitter, appearing in 128 games and batting .278 with 13 homers and 81 RBIs.

After getting swept in San Francisco in the middle of June, the Dodgers have bounced back well against their bitter rivals, and won nine of their last ten meetings against the Giants. In fact, Monday's loss was the only Giants win in Los Angeles all year long. Many historical player head shots courtesy of David Davis. While setting a new home run record every year is unreasonable, three more seasons similar to 2022 would set Murakami up for a massive payday after 2025. It's impossible to know which teams will need what in three years, but it would be safe to assume MLB's big market teams (Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, Mets, Yankees, etc.) will all have interest in Murakami when the time comes. Munetaka Murakami, the record-setting third baseman for the Yakult Swallows in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball, has signed a three-year contract extension and will be posted for MLB teams after the 2025 season, reports the Kyodo News. The new contract is worth roughly $4.4 million per year. The multi-home run game was Turner’s second of the season and 13th in his career. Both such games this season have not only come against the Padres, but in Joe Musgrove starts.
Murakami will spend another three years with the Yakult Swallows before coming to MLB
He threw 10 pitches for all 3 outs, gave up 0 runs, and exited the game to a standing ovation. In 2021, he played in 151 games with a .278 batting average, 27 home runs and 87 RBI. Turner struggled in the postseason, with only four hits in 38 at-bats in the Wild Card, NLDS and NLCS. He strained his hamstring while running to first base in Game 4 of the NLCS and was ruled out of appearing in any future playoff games in 2021. Turner batted another 145 times going into Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres.

Another opposite field homer for these Giant hitters on a series in which the ball has really carried. June 11, 2009 Norfolk Tides placed 2B Justin Turner on the 7-day disabled list retroactive to June 9, 2009. May 29, 2012 New York Mets placed 2B Justin Turner on the 15-day disabled list.
Dodgers sign former All-Star Jason Heyward to minor-league contract
He nearly checked that box off on two separate occasions Saturday night, but drives to the right-center field gap were caught at the warning track. Justin Turner added to what’s been a torrid two months by slugging a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to help lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 11-2 win over the San Diego Padres that clinched a postseason berth. The derby is a wrinkle that might alarm purists, but it hasn’t happened very often. Neverett said his team didn’t decide a game with a home run derby in 2017. They went 0-4 in derbies in 2018 and lost their first one in 2019 before winning three in a row.
White ran into more trouble in the fifth when Profar slapped a one-out double to left and took third on a wild pitch. But White struck out Machado with an 85-mph slider, and Bruihl came on to whiff Jake Cronenworth with an 88-mph slider up in the zone. Musgrove (8-2) allowed only five hits and struck out 10 batters, but was stuck with his second loss of the season. Tied 1-1, the Dodgers could not mount a rally against Musgrove.
Will Smith deftly fielded the in-between hop and applied the tag on Grisham in the same motion. Turner went to work in the bottom of the second inning. He took advantage of a 1-and-1 fastball over the plate from Musgrove, sending it soaring over the left-center field fence. Turner’s offensive heroics made the Dodgers’ pitching efforts stand up.

“I’ve just got some soreness in the muscle,” Treinen said, explaining that the issue was separate from the torn shoulder capsule that cost him four months this season and something he occasionally dealt with during his process of getting built back up on the mound. Indeed, the most encouraging developments for the Dodgers on Sunday happened on the field, not in the standings. Instead, after an 11-2 rout of the San Diego Padres on Sunday that made them the first team in the majors to punch an October ticket, the Dodgers calmly filed out of Petco Park with bigger goals in mind. Taylor underwent elbow surgery last winter and said he couldn’t have made that throw in April, but his arm has gotten stronger as the season has progressed. The Padres threatened again in the second when they loaded the bases with one out on Trent Grisham’s single, Ha-Seong Kim’s walk and C.J.
Turner had three of the Dodgers’ five hits before an announced sold-out crowd of 53,094. In a predictably close game between the two best teams in their division, two swings from Turner and one play in the field made all the difference. In the 2020 World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, Turner had eight hits in 25 at-bats as the Dodgers won the championship. During the 8th inning of Game 6, he was pulled from the game because he had tested positive for COVID-19, before returning to the field to take the official celebratory photo with his teammates and staff, in violation of MLB protocols, leading to criticism from many in the media. The 2020 season was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, shortening the season to only 60 games. On Opening Day, Turner was hit with a pitch for the 73rd time as a Dodger, tying the franchise record set by Zack Wheat.

In 2012, the Mets converted him to an all-around utility infielder but on May 6, 2012, when shortstop Ruben Tejada went on the injured list Turner began platooning at shortstop with Jordany Valdespin until Tejada returned. “He’s a good hitter, he’s done a lot of damage to the teams I’ve been on in the past. But out of all the guys in the lineup, I didn’t feel like he was a huge threat. I just didn’t execute pitches very well and he put good swings on them.”. Chris Taylor on his grind of 2022, and plans for 2023 Dodgers infielder/outfielder Chris Taylor was a guest on Dodger Talk, and talked about the swing mechanics that plagued him during the 2022 season, plus where he might play in 2023. The only blip on the radar was a two-run bomb to David Villar.
Former Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka was NPB's highest paid player this past season with a salary believed to be in the $8 million range. "Justin Turner has now been hit by as many pitches as anybody in Dodger history, tied at 73 with HOFer Zach Wheat, 1 ahead of Jackie Robinson" – via Twitter. Turner hit a career-high three home runs and drove in six runs against the Atlanta Braves on May 8 in a 9–0 win. On June 14, he hit his 100th career home run off of Kyle Hendricks in a 5–3 win against the Chicago Cubs.
